Mr. Emmett John is my special little baby boy. He is my other preemie miracle born at 36 weeks after many months of preterm labor and bed rest. He managed to avoid the NICU only to return to the Peds Unit at 2 months with sleep apnea and then again at 11 months with severe dehydration. He’s now 2 years old and one by one slowly over-coming his health issues, with the exception of being diagnosed with diary and egg allergies. Then on Tuesday, January 25th, 2011, he was officially diagnosed as being Autistic. His speech and language skills are at 25% but he is slowly learning American Sign Language (ASL). Currently, he knows a few basic signs like “please”, “thank you”, “eat” and “more”.
Emmett John has a mischievous grin that he uses for trouble-making and general exploring mayhem. Then he has a beautiful grin that takes up his whole face and crinkles his eyes. He has a very curious personality, which often makes me wonder if he’s practicing for a career as a stunt double. To say that he is active is an understatement; his curious and dare-devil personality tend to get him into quite a bit of trouble. Luckily, he has that adorable crinkle nosed grin to save his butt. There isn’t a baby-gate that we’ve found that can hold him. No barracade that can keep him in (or out for that matter). When he sets his mind to something, look out. His favorite toys are Daddy and his “doggie” (his first word!), Maggie Sue. He’s picky about his sippy cups. Loves Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Pokemon and music – no matter what the tune.
