Gavin’s Legoland
Ah, yes, the Story of Gavin. Definitely not your “fairy tale prince” story, that’s for sure. But it’s part of our story and it’s the beginning of his story, nonetheless. So it must be told. Besides I know you’re all simply dying to know where it all began with my ex. 
Too bad, you’ll have to read that in My Story. This is Gavin’s Story, it is about HIM.
Good, bad or indifferent I will tell his story…as best I can.
Height: 4ft 10.5in
Weight: 74lb
Gavin is my oldest. He’s seen more in 10 years than most have seen in a lifetime, only he doesn’t have the tools to process any of it. He has Asperger’s/high-functioning Autism, OCD, ADHD, Bipolar/Schizo-affective Disorder, PICA, Sensory Integration Disorder and PTSD – just to name a few. He’s quick and clever, highly intelligent and incredibly manipulative. When he’s on his “A-game” he can be one of the sweetest boy you’ve ever met. He has a blue belt in Karate, loves art class and writing stories, and excells in math and science. He loves his blankets and tries to sleep with more stuffed animals than he has room for in bed. Legos are his “thing” and it’s nothing short of amazing the things I’ve seen him do with them. However, Gavin’s entire world is in his head so some days he is so lost in his own universe, that we are lucky to get through to him and connect at all. Whereas other days, he seems fine interacting with us and behaving like every other American boy. To that end, everyday with Gavin is a challenge and a constant balancing act on the head of a pin or the blade of a knife with much of our time spent never knowing how much longer any of us can hang on. Not a moment goes by that I don’t pray for the patience and guidance to help Gavin navigate a society and a world that he is unable to understand. A society and a world that is, for the most part, unwilling or unable to understand him.

With everything Gavin has going on, I swear sometimes that the Sensory Issues are the most difficult to handle. And then poor Gavin, I can't imagine what it must be like for them.
